Belfast Approves Housing And Student Projects
Belfast City Council's Planning Committee has approved several significant development projects in the city.
Two social housing developments have been given the green light, including the redevelopment of the former Havelock House on Ormeau Road and the transformation of the former Belfast Metropolitan College campus on Whiterock Road.
The committee also approved plans for a new purpose-built student accommodation development on Castle Street/Fountain Street, which will include 821 rooms and various communal facilities. In a nod to the city's musical heritage, the committee granted permission for a life-sized bronze statue of legendary musician Rory Gallagher to be installed outside the Ulster Hall.
Finally, a public realm enhancement scheme for Little Patrick Street and Little York Street was approved, which will include new planters, seating, and lighting.
Councillor Arder Carson, Chair of the council's Planning Committee, said: "It's always good to see a range of different planning applications before our Planning Committee. This month we welcome approvals for more social housing in the city, accommodation for our students and approval to a new statue to remember local music legend Rory Gallagher."
