Man In Newry Arrested For Hammer Attack And Burglary

A 40 year-old man has been arrested by Police in Newry on suspicion of aggravated burglary and assault.

Police received reports that a male resident returned to his home in the Violet Hill Avenue area of the city around 8pm on Wednesday night to find a burglary in process.

The resident was then attacked by the two men with a hammer, with a machete-style knife also in their possession.

Detective Sergeant Cole said: "It's unknown at this stage if anything was stolen, as the victim was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which, at this time, are not thought to be life-threatening.

"A 40-year-old man was arrested at a nearby address on suspicion of aggravated burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence. He remains in custody at this time.

"Our enquiries are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who may be able to assist with our investigation, or who have may have been in the Violet Hill area between 7.45 and 8.15pm, to contact us on 101, quoting reference 1540 of 30/10/24."
