Belfast-Based Caffè Nero Premises Fined £4K For Rat Infestation

Caffè Nero in Belfast was fined £4,000 for a suspected rat infestation following the results of a routine hygiene inspection.

Environmental Health Officers carried out the inspection of the coffee shop premises based in 19 Lombard Street on September 19, 2023 and found Caffè Nero did not have adequate procedures to control pests, namely rats, and the premises was not pest proofed.

The shop was rated one indicating 'major improvement necessary' to comply with the food hygiene requirements.

The operator of the premises agreed to close voluntarily for a number of days until officers were satisfied sufficient measures had been taken to remove the imminent risk to public health.

The £4,000 fines, administered at Belfast Magistrates' Court, relate to two offences with further costs of £359 also ordered to be paid.

The premises has since been re-rated following a further inspection where hygiene conditions within the premises were deemed to be at satisfactory standard and a food hygiene rating of 4 (good) was issued.

Bakery proprietor fined for food safety offences
A home bakery proprietor has been fined by Belfast Magistrates for food safety offences. At Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon, south Belfast home bakery proprietor John McKeag received a fine of £4,500, with £263 costs, for nine offences under The Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1995.

Maghaberry Prison Kitchen Scoops Top Food Hygiene Rating
Northern Ireland's busiest kitchen has scooped a top food hygiene rating. Maghaberry Prison, just outside Lisburn, serves on average 3,000 meals daily and is run by Prison Service staff and inmates. The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is now mandatory in Northern Ireland, it has been announced. From today, 07 October, food businesses in the region must now display their food hygiene rating sticker.

Wells Introduces New Food Hygiene Rating Bill
Northern Ireland's Health Minister Food Hygiene Rating Bill to the Assembly. If passed, the bill will make it compulsory for Northern Ireland food businesses to display their hygiene ratings under the 'Food Hygiene Rating Scheme' (FHRS). The current scheme, which has been operating in Northern Ireland since 2011, is only voluntary.
