Sentences Imposed For Separate Belfast Dog Attacks
Two individuals were sentenced at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday for separate dog attacks which injured either a person or animal.
Mark McLaughlin of Prospect Park, Belfast, was convicted following an incident on March 29, 2024 in which his Collie-Husky cross attacked and injured a 3 year-old boy on the face and forehead at Prospect Park.
Mr McLaughlin pleaded guilty to the offence and received a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
He was also ordered to pay £500 in compensation, in addition to £139 in legal and court costs. In the second case, Eileen Irvine of Westrock Grove, Belfast, was convicted following an incident on March 24, 2024 in which her Bulldog and Lurcher-type dog attacked and injured a Jack Russell-type dog in O'Neills Lane, Belfast.
Ms Irvine pleaded guilty and received a £250 fine for the attack and an additional £90 fine for failing to have a licence for her dogs. She was ordered to pay £500 in compensation, along with £89 costs.
Belfast City Council brought both prosecutions in the interest of public safety and in adherence to The Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order.

Hero Army Dog Handlers Honoured
Murdered soldiers who worked with specialist 'sniffer' dogs during the Northern Ireland Troubles have been remembered. The 'Red Paw' and its work across Northern Ireland was the subject of a special memorial service held in England at the weekend. It was in honour of the six dog handlers and two sniffer dogs killed in Northern Ireland.

Belfast City Council is moving its dog fouling campaign to the north of the city, in a bid to crack down on dog litter. The 'Your dog, your job' campaign was launched in west Belfast last month. The Council says it resulted in a reduction of dog litter in the area by just over a quarter (26%).

Belfast City Council has today launched a major campaign to urge dog lovers to ‘scoop their poop’. The high visibility campaign is aimed at owners who allow their pets to foul the city’s streets and parks, but then don’t clean up the mess left behind.

Dog Attack Man Faces Court Fine
A 'Staffie' dog attack has landed a Belfast man in court. He was fined £200 and ordered to pay £300 compensation after his dog attacked and injured a man last December. Robert Gary Bradshaw, from Orkney Street in west Belfast, was convicted of the offence at Belfast Magistrates Court today and was also ordered to pay costs of £69.
