Belfast Business Owner Fined For Selling Vapes To Minors
A Belfast business owner has been fined for selling tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products to minors. Gerard Fitzpatrick, owner of Fitzy’s on the Falls Road, was found guilty of one charge related to the sale of nicotine inhaling products to children under 18 and two charges for not being registered to sell tobacco.
Following complaints received by Belfast City Council, Tobacco Control Officers conducted investigations at the premises. Test purchases confirmed that the shop was selling nicotine inhaling products to individuals under the age of 18. Under the Tobacco Retailers Act (Northern Ireland) 2014, it is illegal for retailers to sell tobacco products or nicotine inhaling products to anyone under the age of 18. Additionally, Fitzys was found to be operating without the necessary registration to sell tobacco products.
The Belfast Magistrates Court imposed a total fine of £2250 and additional court costs on Mr. Fitzpatrick. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with tobacco regulations and protecting minors from exposure to harmful products.
Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death in Northern Ireland. Belfast City Council is committed to making retailers aware of their legal responsibilities around the sale of vapes and tobacco products, particularly to under 18s.
Anyone who has concerns or information about illegal, or underage sales of such goods should report it to the Belfast City Council Tobacco Control Team on 028 9027 0428.
