Major Bus Crash In Newtownards
A serious bus accident occurred on Monday, October 7th, involving an Ulsterbus carrying students from Strangford College.
The incident took place at approximately 3:50pm on the Ballyblack Road East, resulting in the bus overturning. Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) declared a major incident and deployed numerous resources to the scene. Firefighters from five appliances were also on hand to assist, using specialised cutting equipment to rescue two passengers from the bus. The NIAS treated and discharged 33 people at the scene, while four children were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A casualty centre was established at Strangford College, but all students have since been released. Those not taken home by parents or guardians were transported to the Ulster Hospital.
The Ballyblack Road will remain closed for some time while police conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Diversions remain in place.
The Education Authority will be working with the school in the coming days to provide support for any children impacted by the events.
