OU Launch Range Of Fully-Funded Free Courses
The Open University has announced that applications are now open for a range of free postgraduate courses and short micro credential courses funded by the Department for the Economy's Skill Up initiative.
There are 26 courses to choose from in three critical areas: green skills, computing & IT, and leadership and management. Courses range in price from £275 to £3,360 but will be fully funded by the Department under the Skill Up scheme.
The Skill Up funding, designed to enhance workforce capabilities and promote lifelong learning, aligns perfectly with The Open University's mission to make education accessible to all. These courses are designed to develop the next generation of leaders who can navigate complex challenges and drive organisational excellence.
John D'Arcy, Director, The Open University in Northern Ireland commented: "We are delighted to receive this new round of Skill Up funding from the Department for the Economy. This support enables us to offer high-quality postgraduate courses and bite-sized short courses at no cost to the learner, helping individuals upskill in vital areas that will support future economic growth in Northern Ireland. By investing in these fields, we are not only supporting our students' personal and professional growth, but also contributing to the broader economic and environmental goals of the Northern Ireland Executive."
Economy Minister Conor Murphy added: "I am pleased that my department, through the Skill Up initiative, is funding this latest round of courses through The Open University. To date the initiative has enabled more than 25,000 people across the north to access education and training to reskill or upskill, significantly boosting their employability and career prospects. A range of in-demand subject areas are available, and I encourage anyone interested in these courses to apply."

NI Man Extradited To Stand Trial In Republic Of Ireland
A 40-year-old Northern Irish man has been extradited to the Republic of Ireland to stand trial for offences of assault causing serious harm, threats to kill, possession of a firearm and possession of knives.
The offences are alleged to have occurred in the Dublin area in 2014 and 2015.
The man was arrested by the PSNI on 24th July 2018 and proceedings have completed today with his successful extradition to the Republic of Ireland.
Sergeant Davey from the Police Service's International Policing Unit said: "We continue to work with closely with An Garda Siochana to track down fugitives believed to be in Northern Ireland.
"Our message is clear that we will relentlessly pursue those that are trying to delay or deny justice to victims of crime."
DUP Commits To Working With Next UUP Leader
The DUP has committed to working with the next UUP leader to "maximise the pro-Union vote", following the news of Doug Beattie's resignation.
Speaking following the announcement, DUP Leader, Gavin Robinson, said: "I called Doug earlier to give him my best wishes. As leaders within Unionism, we had many shared interests. Whilst we differed over tactics, there is no doubt that Doug is a committed Unionist who wants to see Northern Ireland remain firmly within the United Kingdom.
"Doug knows I was disappointed that in constituencies like Fermanagh & South Tyrone it required unilateral action by the DUP to ensure there was a single pro-Union candidate.
"Divisions within Unionism have handed seats to non-unionists at Council level, in the NI Assembly and most recently in the Westminster elections.
"The election of a new UUP Leader is a matter for UUP members but top of my priorities for the new leader will be discussions about how we maximise the pro-Union vote in future elections."
