Bill A Crucial First Step for Securing Woodlands' Future - Alliance

Alliance MLA, Peter McReynolds, has highlighted that an Assembly Private Members' Bill to strengthen tree protections is a crucial first step in securing the future of our woodlands.

The East Belfast MLA made these remarks after submitting his proposed Bill on tree protection. The Bill aims to enhance tree preservation through stronger tree preservation orders, introduce a new 'heritage tree' designation for some of the oldest and most significant trees and ensure legal protection for trees against permitted developments.

In a statement, Mr McReynolds said: "Trees play a pivotal role in our environment, and are crucial for supporting wildlife and enhancing biodiversity.

"They are also fundamental in our response to climate change, capturing of carbon and can act as natural flood defences in urban areas. It is a sobering fact Northern Ireland currently ranks amongst the worst regions for biodiversity loss across the globe, and is also the least wooded area in Europe.

"It is because of this more must be done to not only protect existing trees and woodlands, but also to reverse the decline we have seen. This Bill will be an important first step in giving our trees and woodlands the protection they need.

"There will be a consultation on these proposals launched shortly and I would encourage everyone to participate, and help shape the future of tree protection here."
