Alliance Condemns Co Down Sword Attack

Alliance has condemned a sword attack that occurred at a house in the Ballaghbeg Park area of Newcastle, County Down, on Sunday morning.

South Down MLA, Andrew McMurray, has called the behaviour of the individual responsible "completely unacceptable".

On Sunday 21 July it was reported that a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after being involved in a sword attack. The victim of the attack has been taken to hospital to be treated after sustaining facial injuries and severe arm injuries.

Mr McMurray said: "This is a truly horrific incident and the individual responsible must be held accountable for their actions. My thoughts are with the victim of the attack, who I wish a speedy and full recovery.

"It is concerning that someone had access to such a lethal weapon. This behaviour is completely unacceptable and there is absolutely no place for it within our community. Newcastle is a peaceful and welcoming town, and this incident does not reflect the values of those living there.

"I would urge anyone that has any information that may be helpful to police in their investigation to please get in touch with them as soon as possible, quoting the reference number 315 of 21/07/24, or report it anonymously via Crimestoppers."
