Antrim Woman Fined After Dog Kills And Injures Sheep
A woman from Antrim has been fined after her dog killed and injured several sheep.
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has successfully brought charges against Mrs Primrose Spence from Antrim under the Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983 (as amended).
Mrs Spence pleaded guilty to being the owner of a Wolfhound crossbreed type dog that strayed and worried livestock in the Crooked Stone Road area of Antrim on 5 October 2023. As a result, two sheep were killed and several others were injured.
The proceedings come after a thorough investigation by the Council's Enforcement Officers who received a report from a livestock owner that the Wolfhound crossbreed type dog had killed and injured several sheep. During the incident the dog was shot and killed.
Mrs Spence pleaded guilty to both charges and was fined £100 for the straying offence and £300 for the livestock worrying offence. She was also ordered to pay an Offenders Levy and was given 20 weeks to pay.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly said: "The Council prioritises the investigation of all offences under the dog control legislation. Reports of straying dogs and livestock worrying are rigorously investigated, and formal action, such as prosecution, is taken, when necessary, as in this case."

Hero Army Dog Handlers Honoured
Murdered soldiers who worked with specialist 'sniffer' dogs during the Northern Ireland Troubles have been remembered. The 'Red Paw' and its work across Northern Ireland was the subject of a special memorial service held in England at the weekend. It was in honour of the six dog handlers and two sniffer dogs killed in Northern Ireland.

DAERA Announces Next Steps For XL Bully Owners
The owners of XL Bully type dogs have been reminded that the exemption scheme will open on 09 August, 2024. From that date, all XL Bully owners who wish to keep their dog will have to apply and pay for an Exemption Certificate by 31 December 2024.

Belfast Council Moves Dog Fouling Campaign North
Belfast City Council is moving its dog fouling campaign to the north of the city, in a bid to crack down on dog litter. The 'Your dog, your job' campaign was launched in west Belfast last month. The Council says it resulted in a reduction of dog litter in the area by just over a quarter (26%).
