Co Down to get £4m water infrastructure scheme
DRD Water Service is to begin work on a £4 million water infrastructure scheme in Co Down next month.
Director of Development for Water Service, Trevor Haslett, said work in the Kilkeel and Annalong areas would involve the construction of a new six million litre capacity service reservoir at Crocknafeola and the installation of 22 km of pipelines on the Moyad, Head and Quarter Roads.
"This work is being undertaken as part of continuing improvement to the water quality and upgrading of water infrastructure in the area," Mr Haslett said. "The scheme will allow Water Service to provide drinking water that has been treated to modern European standards, to meet local demand for the next 20 years. A booster pumping station and watermains to customers on the Head Road will also be provided as part of the scheme."
Work on the scheme is scheduled to last for 18 months and will involve a number of temporary road closures.
The Quarter Road will be closed to through traffic from August 2 to October 18, while the Moyad Road, between Head Road and the Spelga Pass, will be closed from September 6 to March 4, 2005. Sections of the Head Road will also be closed from September 6 to May 31, 2005.

Northern Ireland's drinking water has met the required standards of cleanliness according to a new report The statutory 2002 Drinking Water Quality Report indicated that 98.55% of all tests carried out on samples taken from customers’ taps complied with the regulatory standards set by the Water Quality Regulations (Northern Ireland) for 2002.

Water Service moves to prevent cryptosporidium contamination
DRD Water Service has made substantial progress in implementing a series of recommendations designed to prevent a repeat outbreak of cryptosporidium in the public water supply. The measures were outlined in a recently published report into the cryptosporidium contamination that occurred at Dunore Point water supply earlier this year.
