Labour Win UK General Election

The Labour Party has won the 2024 UK General Election with a majority of 412 seats, to the Conservative Party's 121.

Sir Keir Starmer will be formally appointed Prime Minister by the King at Buckingham Palace today, Friday 05 July. Following this, the new PM will give his first official speech from Downing Street. He is also expect to being announcing his new cabinet later today.

Labour gained 211 seats in the election, while the Conservatives lost a significant 250 seats, described as a historic low in the party's history.

In other results, the Liberal Democrats won 71 seats, an increase of 63 from 2019. The SNP took 9 Westminster, a significant drop for the Scottish party, losing 38. Reform UK gained four new seats, with Nigel Farage returning to Westminster. Reform also saw the largest shift in voter share when compared with 2019 results, gaining 12.3% from 5 years ago.

Of the UK's over 48 million registered voters, 60% turned out to vote – a decrease of 7.6% from 2019.

DUP and Sinn Fein leading in Assembly Elections
UPDATE: The Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein hold the majority of seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly Election. The DUP and Sinn Fein emerged considerably ahead of the other parties with main losers the UUP dropping 9 seats to retain just 18 seats.

Alliance Party Targets Assembly Seats
The Alliance Party has launched its election campaign at Belfast's Waterfront Hall. Party Leader, David Ford said in his speech that they could make two or three Assembly election gains this would entitle them to another seat in the Stormont Executive.

Final counts underway but Trimble declares election 'stalemate'
Ulster Unionist leader, David Trimble has declared the 2003 Northern Ireland Assembly Elections a "stalemate". Although the final few results were yet to be anounced on Friday afternoon the Upper Bann MP said: "We could all be back here in six months time.

BBC Accused Of 'Distorting Democracy'
The Green Party NI has accused the BBC of "distorting our democracy" with an editorial decision to give the TUV more coverage than the Greens during the 2022 Assembly election campaign. Green Party NI Leader Clare Bailey said: "Our public service broadcaster has a duty to be impartial, especially during an election campaign.

Voting Opens In Irish General Election
The Republic's 2011 General Election has begun with the future of the country resting in the hands of Ireland's 3.2m people voters. Polls will stay open until 10pm and opened at 7am this morning. There are a total of 165 seats available for the 31st Dáil, with the Ceann Comhairle, Séamus Kirk, being automatically returned.
