Voting Underway Across Northern Ireland

Poll are open across Northern Ireland as part of the UK-wide General Election.

A total of 136 candidates are competing across 18 constituencies. 127 of the candidates represent 11 total political parties, with the other 9 standing as independents.

Eligible voters can cast their vote until 10pm tonight. People must bring their voting card and valid identification – a list of accepted ID is available here.

Your local polling station will be listed on your polling card, but you can also enter your postcode here.

Polls Open Across NI For Local Council Elections
Polls have opened across Northern Ireland to decide who will sit on local councils across the region. Voting began at 7am this morning, Thursday 18 May, and will close at 10pm tonight. Approximately 807 candidates are contesting 462 seats across NI – a full list of which can be found on the Electoral Office website.

Electoral Roll Grows - But More Try Fraud
The number of people on Northern Ireland's Electoral Register has increased by over 31,000. The new figures relate to the period 2008/09 and also show that the number of cases of suspected postal voting fraud reported to the PSNI has also risen.

Poll shows growing support for online voting
Voters would rather click than tick in the next General Election, according to a survey into attitudes towards voting online released by Touch plc. Concerns have been voiced in recent years over the drop in eligible voters actually using the franchise on voting day.

Voting Opens In Irish General Election
The Republic's 2011 General Election has begun with the future of the country resting in the hands of Ireland's 3.2m people voters. Polls will stay open until 10pm and opened at 7am this morning. There are a total of 165 seats available for the 31st Dáil, with the Ceann Comhairle, Séamus Kirk, being automatically returned.
