Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Drink Or Drug Driving

A man has been arrested in Ballykelly on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs in the Main Street area of Ballykelly, by officers from Derry City and Strabane District Support Team (DST) and Local Policing Team (LPT).

The 36-year-old man was stopped by officers in the Buncrana Road area of L'Derry and arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs, assault on police, resisting police, disorderly behaviour and criminal damage to a police vehicle, which will now be off the road until repaired.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Inspector Pearce said: "It is extremely worrying and deeply frustrating that people are disregarding the safety of others and themselves by taking the incredibly dangerous decision to drive after drinking. We are thankful that there were no injuries to others on this occasion.

"Police will continue to use all the powers and legislation at our disposal to detect people who insist on driving after having taken drugs or alcohol. All motorists need to take into account the consequences of their actions. Never take the risk of having even one drink if you are driving."
