Police Investigate Two Sudden Deaths In Newry

The PSNI have launched an investigation into the sudden deaths of a man and a woman in Newry.

It is understood that police received a report of the death of a man, aged in his 20s, on Sunday, 02 June. This was followed by another report of the death of a woman, also aged in her 20s, on Wednesday, 05 June. Both deaths are said to have occurred in the Sandys Street area.

District Commander for Newry, Mourne and Down, Superintendent Norman Haslett said: "I am aware that the deaths of these two young people will cause concern in the local community.

"A post-mortem has now been completed into the man's death and we await the results of a toxicology report to help determine the cause of death.

"A post mortem is still to be held to establish the cause of death of the woman – and we would urge people not to speculate at this time.

"I want to take this opportunity to reassure you that we, as a Police Service, will fully investigate the circumstances surrounding this loss of life, and send our sympathies to the families and friends of those involved."

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Tragedy As Second Man Killed By Train
A 62-year-old man has died in the Irish Republic after being hit by a train - the second such incident inside two days. The accident happened on the Ennis to Colbert line in the townland of Ralahine South, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare just after 10pm last night. It is believed the man was taking farm animals over the track at the time.

218 Drug-Related Deaths In NI In 2020
A total of 218 drug-related deaths were registered in NI in 2020, the highest number of record and a continuation of an upwards trend. The figure was revealed in the latest report on Drug-related and drug-misuse deaths in Northern Ireland, 2010-2020, published by Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra).

PSNI Warning Over Drug-Related Deaths
The PSNI has said that a senior detective has been coordinating investigations in drug-related deaths last year. The deaths have been the subject of detailed investigation locally by District officers. Detective Superintendent McMullan's investigations are said to be attempting to ensure "any possible linkages are made and progressed".

Booze Killing More Than Drug Abuse
Alcohol-related deaths in Northern Ireland last year was the highest on record, a report from the NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) has revealed. NISRA said that 283 people died from drink problems in 2009, up from 276 the year before and setting a new high.
