DUP's Stephen Dunne Congratulates TT Success Of Michael Dunlop

North Down DUP MLA Stephen Dunne has congratulated road-racing legend Michael Dunlop in the Northern Ireland Assembly on equalling the record of 26 Isle of Man TT wins set by his late Uncle, Joey Dunlop.

Speaking in the Assembly Chamber Mr Dunne commented: "I would like to Congratulate our very own road racing legend, Mr Michael Dunlop on winning his 26th TT Race on the Isle of Man on Saturday, equalling the long-held record of his iconic Uncle, the late, great Joey Dunlop. Joey, who was voted Northern Ireland's Greatest ever Sports Star won his last TT, in the year 2000, and it is so fitting that twenty four years later, his nephew Michael equals that magnificent record of success.

This is an incredible achievement, and one very worthy of celebration and proper recognition, for a local sporting hero from Our Wee Country. We have a very proud legacy and heritage in Northern Ireland, for punching well above our weight in so many sports, which we can all be so proud of, and this success continues to this day.

The Dunlop Family name in Motorcycle Road Racing is truly world famous, through the success of Joey, Michael’s late Dad, Robert and his late brother William, all of whom are sadly no longer with us, but have left an incredible legacy of dedication, humility and success through adversity.

Despite many personal trials and tragedies, Michael continues to excel, and to win 26 races at the Isle of Man TT, which is one of the most iconic, dangerous and competitive motorsport competitions in the World, is a truly phenomenal achievement.

Michael was set to win his 27th TT at the weekend, only for an unfortunate technical issue with his helmet whilst leading the race. I have no doubt Michael Dunlop will go on to make even more history this week, with more wins and records in the years ahead."
