Alliance Calls For Clarity On DUP's Position On Executive Agreement

Alliance North Down MLA, Stephen Farry, has said that the people of the area "need urgent clarity" on where local General Election candidates stand on the DUP's latest comments on Brexit and the deal to restore the Executive.

It is understood that DUP Leader Gavin Robinson has said that the deal had been "oversold", with Dr Farry raising concerns over hints of backtracking on the agreement.

Dr Farry said candidates in North Down needed to make clear their views on the move, especially given both the TUV and DUP have given their backing to former DUP MLA Alex Easton.

Dr Farry said: "North Down was a Remain constituency in the Brexit referendum and remains very pro-European.

"However, the DUP seem content to fight Brexit battles from years ago in a bid to ignite more constitutional fear-mongering, which is their standard playbook in election campaigns. We need to move on from the instability Brexit has brought and discuss the big issues people are concerned about, such as health, education and the economy.

"Therefore, local General Election candidates need to make clear their stance following Gavin Robinson's comments. The DUP is stepping aside in Fermanagh and South-Tyrone for the UUP, so does Tim Collins back these comments?

"Alex Easton has received backing from both the TUV and the DUP, two parties with opposing views on the return to Stormont. That is puzzling enough, but local people now need to hear Mr Easton's opinion, if he backs Gavin Robinson or Jim Allister.

"It is understandable these two candidates in particular are attempting to hedge their bets on one of the big issues people are concerned about. But it's time they stopped hiding and made their views clear to the electorate."

£350,000 Poyntzpass Resurfacing Scheme To Begin On 10 June

A new £350,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme in Poyntzpass has been announced by Infrastructure Minister, John O'Dowd.

The works, set to get underway on Monday 10 June, will extend for approximately 1,800 metres from approximately 600 metres north of junction of the Demoan Road to the junction with the Gambles Road.

To facilitate the works, it will be necessary to implement a road closure (Monday to Friday) between 09.30 am until 16.30 pm from Monday 10 June until Friday 5 July 2024.

The dates and duration of the road closures will be dependent on the progress of the scheme and on favourable weather conditions. To help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and follow the signed diversionary route via A27 Church Street, A27 Chapel Street, A27 Tandragee Road, A27 Poyntzpass Road, A27 Auglish Road, A27 Scarva Road, B3 Markethill Road, B3 Moyrourkan Road, B3 Tandragee Road, A28 Gosford Road, A27 Newry by-pass, A1 Newry by-pass and A1 Tandragee Road.

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, however road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Friday 5 July 2024, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change.

Newtownabbey Man Jailed For Attempting To Send Drugs Through The Post

The PSNI has welcomed the sentencing of a Newtownabbey man at Newry Crown Court today following his conviction for drugs offences.

29-year-old Dean Wilson was arrested after attempting to send drug packages through the post. A subsequent search of his home and further police enquiries had revealed further quantities of drugs and drug making paraphernalia, along with significant unexplained deposits in various financial accounts.

He was charged with a number of drug related offences and subsequently entered a guilty plea at court.

He has been sentenced to 24 months, half of which is to be served on license

Detective Sergeant McDowell said: "I hope that this sentence sends a clear message to those involved in the sale and supply of drugs who seek to make profit at the expense of causing harm in our community. We will continue to robustly and proactively pursue those involved in drug supply, at all levels, arrest them and hold them accountable before the courts."
