New anti-tank weapon to secure jobs and boost army firepower

The manufacture of the Javelin anti-tank guided weapon system in the UK will secure jobs and provide British troops with the best weapon of its type in the world, according to the Minister for Procurement Lord Bach.

The Minister today officially opened a new high-tech facility in Basildon, Essex, where key parts for the new missile system will be produced.

The BAE Systems Production Facility, which will employ more than 30 staff, will make the advanced guidance system for the shoulder-launched weapon.

The £300 million contract to supply the new missile system was awarded to a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon last year - BAE Systems is a subcontractor on the programme. Although an American designed weapon, Javelin will be constructed in the UK, sustaining around 300 UK jobs in total.

The system will provide UK troops with a marked increase in firepower and is capable of destroying the most heavily protected tanks and armoured vehicles. It replaces the Milan anti-tank missile which has been in service for more than 20 years.

A 'fire and forget' weapon, Javelin locks onto its target, guiding itself once launched. It can also use a 'top attack' mode, rising to more than 100 feet in the air before descending on top of the target where armour is often weaker. The launcher is light enough to be carried by just two men.

Speaking at the opening of the new facility Lord Bach said: "This new facility will help ensure that UK Infantry are provided with the very best in portable anti-tank weaponry. Basildon has been home to world-class engineers for many years - this facility will draw on that experience, ensuring the area remains a centre of engineering excellence for years to come and that our troops receive the best equipment available."

Javelin will be used by 16 Air Assault Brigade, 3 Commando Brigade and the Mechanised Infantry.
