SDLP Call For Immediate Ceasefire In Gaza
The SDLP has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The party's MPs at Westminster announced that they would back a ceasefire call in the House of Commons, held during an Opposition Day debate.
Speaking ahead of the vote, SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP said: "30,000 people are dead in Gaza. Entire communities have been reduced to rubble and millions have been displaced. Now the IDF is threatening to attack the only safe places left in Rafah and the surrounding areas in a horrific new front against the people of Palestine. It is, for the avoidance of all doubt, a genocide and the international community has enabled it.
"The only legitimate and ethical path to peace is an immediate ceasefire. Anything else is totally deficient."

Colum Eastwood has challenged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ensure the UK backs the United Nations' call for a ceasefire in Gaza. During Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday the SDLP Leader and MP asked the PM would the UK's representative vote in favour of the next UN resolution on a ceasefire. The UK abstained on the last UN vote.

In his address to 50 former members of the Irish Parliament and Senate in Stormont last night he said that 13 years on from the Good Friday Agreement, there is political stability but no real political progress.
