PSNI Identify Body Recovered From Lough Neagh

A body recovered in a coastline area of Lough Neagh on Sunday 18th February has been identified as Alan Whiteside.

The 33-year-old Mr Whiteside was reported missing to police in Antrim on Sunday, 17 December.

PSNI Detective Inspector Lenaghan said that Mr Whiteside was identified following a post-mortem examination.

DI Lenaghan said: "Our thoughts are with Alan's family at this sad time and Alan's mother, Pamela and his family, along with myself would like to thank our partner agencies, Community Rescue Service, Lough Neagh Rescue, SARDA IN, Skywatch and HMCG who have all worked tirelessly to help find Alan.

"We would also like to thank the public for all their huge assistance throughout this difficult time with searches and enquiries."

Lough Neagh area to receive £3.2m funding support

Funders join forces to enhance wildlife habitat
Regular visitors to the RSPB Reserve at Portmore Lough will have noticed that the wet fringe of scrub and bushes around the Lough is disappearing fast. The bird hide that was once shrouded in willow and alder trees, can now be seen sitting proud above the reedbed.

Zebra Mussels continue to spread
The Department of the Environment (DOE) has confirmed concern that Zebra Mussels have spread to Lough Neagh. Zebra Mussels were first discovered in Northern Ireland in Lough Erne in 1997 and every effort has since been made to prevent their spread to other waterways.
