Carrickfergus set for nautical dash
Two gracious ships will sail into Carrickfergus Harbour tomorrow, helping to re-launch Northern Ireland’s Sea Cadet movement with nautical dash.
Bringing the romance of the sea to Carrickfergus will be Training Ships Royalist and John Jerwood.
The visit of the sail-training brig and the new power-training vessel is part of a nationwide campaign to raise funds and profile for the Sea cadet movement.
The year-long campaign aims to encourage interest, awareness and appreciation of the organisation, helping it to expand and improve its existing facilities and adventure training programmes.
There are nearly 400 Sea Cadet units across the UK, 11 of them in Northern Ireland with some 300 Cadets and 80 Adult instructors based in the Province. The objective of the movement is to use naval training and traditions to help young people to become responsible and active citizens.
Each unit is a stand alone charity, responsible for raising the money to pay for costs such as light, heat, power and insurance. Around £6 million is raised nationally in the community by volunteers, while the Ministry of Defence supports the organisation with £8 million.
Tomorrow's visit is open to the public between 7 and 8.30pm.

The SDLP has accused the DUP of creating a de-facto Irish Sea border on energy support payments for people in NI. SDLP Cost of Living Spokesperson Matthew O'Toole said that by boycotting the Stormont institutions the party are making it harder to get energy support payments to families in the North that are being received in other parts of the UK.

DUP Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP has challenged the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State regarding the continued political and economic harm being caused by the Northern Ireland Protocol. Sir Jeffrey said the people of Northern Ireland have the opportunity next Thursday to remove the long shadow of the Irish Sea Border, by voting DUP.
