Translink Workers To Join 'Generalised Day Of Action'

Translink workers will join teachers, nurses, healthcare staff and civil servants for a "generalised day of action" on Thursday, 18 January.

A total of 15 unions have announced that they will participate in the strike action across Northern Ireland, in what has been described as "the biggest strike in the history of Northern Ireland".

Unite, one of Northern Ireland's main trade unions, has confirmed that some 8,000 members will take part in the day of action, including 2,300 Translink workers.

Speaking on BBC's Good Morning Ulster programme Unite deputy regional secretary Davy Thompson said that while he acknowledged the impact of he strike action on the public, he urged the public to consider the impact of "the decades of under-investment in our public services".

He added: "The under-investment has created havoc in our public services across Northern Ireland and has impacted everybody within Northern Ireland.

"We now have a secretary of state who has made it clear just before Christmas that he has the money, he's just not willing to pay it.

"It seems he's using people as a bargaining chip in a game of politics which is absolutely wrong."
