£80m trains signal new era for NI railway system
Secretary of State, Paul Murphy has highlighted the improvement in rail travel that will be brought by the delivery of 23 new trains for the Northern Ireland rail network.
Mr Murphy was speaking at Central Station in Belfast on Tuesday when he viewed the first of the new trains that will replace the old class 80 trains in Autumn 2004.
The Secretary of State said: "This is a landmark occasion for the railway system in Northern Ireland. Passengers will experience a step-change in service reliability as well as improved accessibility and quality in rail travel. Northern Ireland Railways will similarly benefit from having modern and efficient Rolling Stock to plan their services.
"Government investment of over £80m in this project signifies our commitment to providing a modern, sustainable, safe transportation system which benefits many in our society, not to mention the benefit to both the economy and the environment."
Mr Murphy acknowledged the role of those involved in the project including the general public who had been consulted on the style and layout of the new trains. He said: "The new trains will provide a major step-up in service quality. They will offer a realistic alternative to the private car and attract more passengers to public transport.
"I know that Translink are also grateful for the views of the travelling public that have helped shape these trains. I believe we have a product now which suits both today's passengers and hopefully those we are seeking to attract back onto our railways."
The 23 new three coach trains will replace all of Northern Ireland Railways existing class 80 rolling stock.
Each new train will be capable of speeds up to 90mph, with fully air-conditioned cabins and seating for over 200 passengers with additional space for wheelchairs and bicycles.
