Political talks aim to kick-start review
Talks aimed at kick-starting the local political process are due to resume today following yesterday's European election results.
The main political parties have been invited to the talks which are being chaired by British and Irish ministers at Stormont on Tuesday.
Yesterday, the DUP's Jim Allister and Sinn Féin's Bairbre de Brun were elected to the European Parliament with first preference votes of 175,761 and 144,541 respectively.
The third MEP seat was eventually taken by the UUP's Jim Nicholson after the SDLP's Martin Morgan conceded defeat after being out polled in terms of first preference votes.
Under the proportional representation voting process, transfer votes from the Mr Allister to Mr Nicholson ensured the UUP candidate retained his Brussels seat.
Independent John Gilliland polled 36,270 votes and Eamonn McCann of the Social Environmental Alliance secured 9,172 votes and Green Party candidate Lindsay Whitcroft won 4,810 first preference votes.
In all, around 554,744 voters took part in last Thursday's election to decide which of the seven candidates would take the province's three seats in the European Parliament.
