Minister announces £2m CCTV funding
Criminal Justice Minister, John Spellar today announced a further £2 million in funding for the development of town centre CCTV schemes.
Announcing the decision Mr Spellar said the funding would help areas across Northern Ireland become "safer places to work, visit or spend leisure time".
"Government recognises the valuable part that CCTV can play in tackling problems associated with community safety and concerns about crime," he said.
"CCTV has also played a significant part in contributing to a more active night-time economy and the regeneration of town centres.
"There is a considerable demand for further CCTV systems to be installed in Northern Ireland and it is important that we invest in those schemes that can be sustained over the medium to long term. In addition they must, in order to have the greatest impact, be situated in areas where the public gather on a regular and frequent basis and be part of a wider community safety plan for the area."
The additional £2 million will be invested across a number of key priorities including the underpinning and expansion of current town centre schemes, new CCTV systems in town centres, and examining the feasibility of new CCTV technology in helping to combat crime and disorder.
The money will be distributed by the NIO's Community Safety Unit, through local community safety partnerships, which have been established to tackle crime, fear of crime and anti-social behaviour in their areas.
A project group has been established to advise the Unit on the best method of allocation for the funding.

Teen's Lucky Escape After Firework Attack
Police said a teenager is lucky not to have lost his sight after he was attacked with a firework in Larne. The incident occurred in the Linn Road area of the Co Antrim town at around 7.20pm on Sunday 13 October. The 14-year-old victim was lucky not to lose his vision or his hands after the firework exploded on his chest and face.

PSNI Launches Rural And Wildlife Crime Prevention Campaign
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has launched a five-week long policing operation to combat rural and wildlife crime. The operation, which began today, Wednesday 10th May and will run until Sunday 18th June, aims to raise awareness of crime prevention measures.

Child Seen Walking In Castlewellan Around 5am
Police are investigating reports of a child seen walking alone in Castlewellan in the hours of this morning. According to police, the young child, believed to be a girl, was seen walking on the town's Main Street, on the footpath near the entrance to the forest park, at about 4:55am.
