Alliance Calls For 'Greater Effort' To Maximise Recycling
The Alliance Party has called for "greater effort" in maximising recycling opportunities across Northern Ireland.
The party's Agriculture and Environment spokesperson, John Blair, made the call after joining Keep Recycling Local for a tour of local recycling facilities.
The South Antrim MLA said: "More significant effort must be taken to ensure we are maximising the recycling opportunities we have here in Northern Ireland. We must do everything possible to not only reach, but exceed, the target of 70% recycling rate by 2030. This is essential to protecting our environment.
"My visit to the South Antrim facilities in my own constituency was especially meaningful in terms of witnessing a circular economy first-hand and the benefits it can bring. I saw demonstrated how a bottle of Baileys can be bottled in South Antrim, consumed in South Antrim and then, because we have separation of recycling in this area, be collected by Bryson Recycling in Mallusk who then send it on to Enva in Toome, then to Encirc's NI location, before ending up back in Mallusk as a new bottle ready to start the process again.
"This is a perfect example of a circular economy in action with obvious environmental benefits also. We must ensure however that this is not a solitary example, and that Northern Ireland can lead the way regarding recycling.
"Alliance will continue to press councils to move away from co-mingled recycling systems as there is no question that recycling quality is better when separation occurs at the source."

Belfast Council Rolls Out New Recycling Scheme
About 55,000 homes in Belfast are to benefit from a new recycling scheme that will seek to maximise the amount of waste households can recycle. The changes will be rolled out between August and November and will affect inner-city homes currently on a black recycling box collection, as well as apartments with communal recycling facilities.

NI Council Secures Almost £186K For Household Recycling Centres
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has secured £186,200 funding for household recycling centres in the district. The investment, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), will mean an additional 365 tonnes can be recycled each year.

Police Officer Injured In Attacks
A police officer has been injured following serious disturbances in Larne, Co Antrim. On Sunday night (30 March), police received a report of disturbances in the Sallagh Park South area at around 8.40pm. Within minutes, officers arrived at the scene and were immediately attacked.

Northern Ireland's newest recycling plant, a £1.2 million facility in Belfast, has officially opened today. Kosmos Glass Recycling, which received more than £200,000 in financial support from Invest NI, boasts a state-of-the-art Krysteline machine - the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.
