DSD moves to new Gasworks headquarters

The Department for Social Development, Northern Ireland’s largest Government Department, is moving to new headquarters at the Gasworks Business Park in Belfast.

Alan Shannon, Permanent Secretary at DSD, today officially took possession of the keys of the Lighthouse which will be the Department’s new headquarters, replacing Churchill House, which is to be demolished as part of the major Victoria Square redevelopment.

Around 360 people will be moving to the Lighthouse Building over a two-week period beginning next week.

In a separate move, some 100 other staff have already moved to James House, also on the former gasworks site. This building will shortly be extended to accommodate more staff from other civil service offices around the city centre.

Speaking at today’s event, Alan Shannon, Permanent Secretary at DSD, said: "We are delighted to take possession of this new building in such pleasant surroundings overlooking the River Lagan. This building, together with James House, will provide a modern office environment for DSD staff.

"It is appropriate that DSD, the Department responsible for urban regeneration, should relocate to the old Gasworks site where a modern business environment has been created on a historic brown field site."

The Department currently employs more than 8,000 people with the greatest number based in the Social Security Agency.
