Nurse of the year award announced
Health Minister, Angela Smith has announced this year's recipient of the Royal College of Nursing, Nurse of the Year Award.
Aoife Bradley from the Belfast City Hospital HSS Trust received the award in recognition of her pioneering work in developing and defining the role of genetic counsellor in Northern Ireland.
Aoife, a genetics counsellor in the Department of Medical Genetics at Belfast City Hospital, also played a significant role in setting up the regional cancer genetics service. She is a source of knowledge for other health care professionals and lectures graduate and postgraduate students.
Addressing all the “Nurse of the Year” finalists, the Minister said: “We look to our nursing workforce to make a difference to patients, no one can doubt that the profession is focussed on modernisation, underpinned by leadership and innovation. Our nurses can justly be called leaders for today and tomorrow.”
The Minister also expressed her gratitude to our overseas nurses for their contribution to healthcare and commended the Royal College and local employers for their support to them, in sometimes difficult circumstances.
