Derry tourism figures on the increase

Tourism counter enquiries at Derry's Tourist Information Centre have increased by 21%, latest figures have revealed.

The figures where published in the annual report of the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau (DVCB), and covered the period from January – December 2003 in comparison.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting held in Da Vincis Hotel Complex on

Wednesday, DVCB Manager, Catherine O'Connor said tourism now generated over £20m for the local economy.

"I am particularly delighted that we have increased our market share of visitors from the closer to home markets, that is, Republic of Ireland and Great Britain by 3% and 2% respectively," Mrs O'Connor said.

She added that during 2003, DVCB had recorded the busiest year for familiarisation visits for both media and travel trade generating over 650 representatives sampling Derry as a viable tourism destination.

"As well as designating 'The Walled City of Derry' as a signature project, NITB have also identified five winning themes which they believe will deliver competitive advantage for Northern Ireland," she said.

"Four of these are particularly relevant to Derry ie short breaks, excellent events, business tourism and culture/heritage" she added.

Welcoming today's news, Derry Mayor, and Chairman of the DVCB, Councillor Shaun Gallagher said tourism represented a significant opportunity for the city and continued partnership was key to the success of the DVCB in strengthening Derry's reputation as an international and attractive leisure and business destination.
