UCF urges Euro candidates to support Smoking Ban
The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) has written to all six European Election Candidates in Northern Ireland urging them to support a ban on smoking in the workplace.
Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention, Ulster Cancer Foundation said his charity was calling on the Euro candidates to ensure that workers in Northern Ireland, as well as the rest of Europe, enjoyed the same protection as their colleagues in the Republic of Ireland.

“The large majority of Northern Ireland’s population (74%) are non-smokers and there is significant support for a policy to be implemented in all working environments for the safety of staff and their customers.
The Republic of Ireland was the first country in the EU to implement the smoking ban on the March 29.
Figures released today by the by the Office of Tobacco Control (OTC) in the Republic, found one in five smokers now choose not to smoke at all on a night out.
Since the ban was imposed, 96% of pubs and restaurants have complied with the ban - with 89% displaying the required no smoking signs.
