Officer in 'serious condition' following hit-and-run incident
A police officer is in serious condition in hospital after being hit by a speeding car in south Armagh on Sunday.
The officer was manning a routine check point on the Blayney Road in Crossmaglen in the early hours of the morning when he was hit by a white car with Republic of Ireland number plates.
The community officer, who is in his 40s, suffered serious head injuries in the incident and is currently in intensive care in Craigavon Area Hospital.
The vehicle, which failed to stop and is believed to have crossed the border, is thought to have suffered some damage in the collision. Police are following this line of enquiry and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
Newry and Armagh UUP Assembly member, Danny Kennedy described those behind the collision as "menacing and reckless".
"This was the action of someone who has no respect for the life of others and I condemn it as I think all right thinking people would," Mr Kennedy said.
“Checkpoints are in place for a reason and must be observed. I hope that the PSNI in conjunction with the Garda will make a strenuous effort to apprehend the person responsible for knocking down and injuring a police officer on duty."
