Appeal For Witnesses To Taxi Driver Assault

Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault on a taxi driver in Strathfoyle last night, Sunday 16th April.

A taxi driver is reported to have been assaulted by a male passenger as he dropped him off in Westlake, at around 11.45pm. The driver sustained a hand injury. Criminal damage was also caused to the driver's car.

Police have arrested a 47-year-old man on suspicion of offences, including grievous bodily harm and criminal damage. He remains in custody this afternoon.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed what happened, or has information which may assist their enquiries to call 101, quoting reference 2098 of 16/04/23. Alliance Election Posters Defaced With Sectarian Slogans

Alliance Ballymena Councillor John Hyland has said that he will not be deterred after a number of his posters were defaced with sectarian slogans in Ballymena.

Cllr Hyland said: "It's sad to see such sectarian bile, however, we won't be deterred. Alliance will continue to fight for a united community and those who deface our posters are clearly threatened by that.

"As a local councillor, I will continue to work for everyone in our community.

"I have reported this to the PSNI and would encourage anyone with information to do likewise."

SF Welcomes 'Exciting Opportunity' Of New L'Derry To Heathrow Flights

Sinn Féin has welcomed the news of new direct flights from L'Derry to Heathrow as an 'exciting opportunity' that will help connect Derry to major world destinations.

Foyle MLA Pádraig Delargy said: "I am delighted that new direct flights from City of Derry Airport to Heathrow in London will begin on 6 May.

"This is exciting as opportunity that will open up connections from the north west to the US and other major destinations across the world.

"We need to continue strengthening connections to City of Derry airport to boost the local economy and ensure there is a direct link to the north west for international investors.

"I look forward to seeing these new flights started."

A1 Reopens After Lorry Fire
The A1 is now open following a lorry blaze close to the coach works at Banbridge Road, Dromore, this morning. It was closed in both directions after the driver reported smelling fumes from his cab and pulling over to find the vehicle in flames. No one was hurt in the incident. The road is now fully open.

A Sinn Fein Councillor has expressed concern at the loss of the L'Derry to Stanstead flight at the City of Derry airport due to the collapse of UK airline Flybmi. The company announced its plans to formally enter administration today, Monday 18 February, with all flights cancelled immediately.

BMI To Start L'Derry To Stansted Flights
BMI Regional is to start flying between the City of Derry Airport and London Stansted with the help of a £3.9million grant from the government. Flights will start on Sunday, 26 March, following a decision by Ryanair to stop serving the airline.

TV presenter Eamonn Holmes from Belfast is stepping down from hosting Sky News Sunrise to pursue other projects. Holmes, who has anchored the show for 11 years, confirmed he is leaving on his Facebook page.

Airport Residents Concerned At City Move
Local residents have voiced their concern at the decision by airline bmibaby to switch its operations from Belfast International Airport to George Best Belfast City Airport. The change of gateway airport will see up to 48 weekly flights leaving from the City rather than Aldergrove.
