UUP's John Kyle Appointed New High Sheriff Of Belfast
Ulster Unionist Councillor, John Kyle, has been announced as the new High Sheriff of Belfast.
Mr Kyle, councillor for East Belfast replaces DUP Councillor, Alderman John Hussey as the 123rd High Sheriff of Belfast.
Looking ahead to his year in office, Councillor Kyle said; "I'm absolutely delighted to be appointed as the new High Sheriff of Belfast.
"It's a tremendous honour to be appointed to such a prestigious role and I'm looking forward to a busy year in office supporting the work of the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor throughout 2023."
A former GP, Councillor Kyle was first co-opted on to Belfast City Council in 2007. He was then first elected to the council in 2011.
Representing the Titanic District Electoral Area, he has served on many council committees including City Growth and Regeneration as well as many external bodies such as the Eastside Partnership Board.
Historically, the role of High Sheriff has been 'protector of the monarch's interests': however, it is now largely ceremonial and - since 1973 - the appointment has been made by the Secretary of State, based on a nomination from Belfast City Council.
The High Sheriff will take up office for a full calendar year, from January through to December.
Power NI Working To Resolve Issue With Energy Support Vouchers
The SDLP has contact Power NI after it was reported to them that some customers were unable to use their £600 energy support voucher.
After contacting Power NI on behalf of her constituents, Ms McLaughlin was told there is an ongoing technical issue and it was hoped it could be resolved quickly.
Foyle MLA Ms McLaughlin said: "Given the long waits facing people right across the North to receive their £600 energy support payment, it's understandable that people are concerned after trying to redeem their voucher at the Post Office only to be told that there was an ongoing issue impacting payments.
"After learning of these problems from a number of constituents today I contacted Power NI on their behalf who confirmed that there is a technical issue with the company's systems linking up with the Post Office. They reassured me that a team are currently working on rectifying the issues and hope to have the situation resolved as quickly as possible.
"I will continue liaising with Power NI until the issues are fixed."
