Tradings Standards issue loft conversions warning
Homeowners planning to carry out loft conversions over the coming summer months are being advised to seek Building Control approval from their local district council.
The Trading Standards Service (TSS) issued the advice after expressing concern that householders may not be aware of the safety implications of such conversions.
Stuart MacMurdo from TSS said: “We are concerned that householders may not be aware of the safety implications of loft conversions. We recently received a number of complaints regarding unsafe workmanship and work that doesn’t meet building control standards.
“Failing to seek and obtain approval (from the local district council) could compromise you and your family’s safety, nullify your house insurance and may well affect the resale value of your home.”
Dr MacMurdo also warned householders to exercise caution when choosing a builder to carry out the work.
“Beware of builders who attempt to convince you that Building Control is not required and then offer their services at cut price rates," Dr MacMurdo said.
"Ask to see the previous work of the builder – not just a video or photographs of past work, so that you can talk to the householder about the quality of workmanship," he concluded.
Anyone who may have queries regarding loft conversions can contact HSENI’s Information and Advice Helpline on 0800 0320 121.
