NI Council Election Moved Over Clash With Coronation

The date Northern Ireland's next council election is to be moved t0 18 May 2023, due to it clashing with the coronation of King Charles III.

The election has been planned to be held on Thursday 04 May, however with the coronation planned for Saturday 06 May, Northern Ireland Office Minister, Steve Baker, has told council's that the date of the election has now been moved so as not to "impede the smooth running of the election and cause difficulties for staff involved".

DUP and SF repeat Westminster election success
As counting in Northern Ireland’s council elections proceeded today, the DUP has virtually repeated its Westminster performance by strengthening its hand in local government. Ian Paisley’s party increased its number of seats with 182 councillors being elected, up 52 on 2001 election figures with a near 30% share of the vote.

Electoral Office Writes To TUV Leader
The head of Northern Ireland's electoral authority has refuted claims by Traditional Unionist Jim Allister that his office had deferred a Castlereagh Council By-Election. In March Mr Allister, the anti-power sharing TUV leader, suggested the DUP had a motive to hold off on an election to replace disgraced councillor Iris Robinson.

Alliance Launches Assembly Election Manifesto
Alliance has launched its Assembly election manifesto which outlines the vision for all of the people of Northern Ireland. The event took place at the Park Avenue Hotel in east Belfast on Tuesday, 21 February. Party leader Naomi Long said the manifesto showcased the need to change things to make politics in NI work better.

Hain warns parties not to let progress slip away
Northern Ireland Secretary of State Peter Hain has warned local politicians not to let devolution slip through their fingers because of the recent dispute over the transfer of policing and justice powers.
