FSB concerned at economic damage caused by MoT strike

The Federation of Small Businesses has today expressed concern that cancellation of MoT tests, as a result of civil servants industrial action, has the potential to damage the local economy.

Wilfred Mitchell, FSB Northern Ireland Policy Chair said: “The vast majority of Northern Irelands 60,000 small businesses rely to some degree on their car or van to do business. Also, this industrial action could cause problems for employees getting to their place of work.

“By not having an MoT certificate, directors of small businesses who are car and van owners face major difficulties in getting insurance and tax and therefore cannot use their vehicle for business purposes."

He said that if the strike continued the local economy could face "significant damage”.

He called on both sides, NIPSA and the Government, to "redouble their efforts to find a deal so this disruption to our economy can be brought to an end.”
