NI unemployment figure falls to new low

Northern Ireland's unemployment rate has fallen to a new low.

The latest labour force figures, released today, show that the current unemployment figure has fallen from 6.3% to 5.2% for the period January – March 2004.

Employment figures, meanwhile, have increased by 3,000 to 720,000 for the same period.

Commenting on the figures, Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister, Barry Gardiner, said: “The continuing low level of unemployment is welcome. The latest picture shows that some 40,000 people are unemployed. This represents a fall of approximately 8,000 from the previous quarter and a fall of 1,000 from the same period last year.”

Curently, the Northern Ireland seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 5.2 % is lower than four other UK regions: London (6.9%), Scotland (5.7%), the West Midlands (5.5%) and the North East (5.3%).
