Although the Derry to Coleraine train, which was travelling at around 70mph, and was derailed as a result of the collision none of the 34 passengers on board were uninjured.

Rail operator, Translink confirmed that a full investigation was underway but maintained that the crossing had received a full risk assessment in March following concerns from local residents.

Damage to the track at the scene of the crash has led to the closure of the line and a substitution bus service is currently in operation between Coleraine and Londonderry.
