Action To Address Anti-Social Behaviour In University Area
A Strategic Partnership Group set up to address anti-social behaviour in the University and Lower Ormeau areas of Belfast has held its first meeting, convened by Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey.
The Minister convened the meeting to review the progress being made on tackling the longstanding issues.
Following the meeting, the Minister said: "These are issues which require long-term solutions; they are solvable if we work together – residents, landlords, agencies, local and central government and all stakeholders in the area. I welcome the commitment of partners to work alongside me in this collective approach.
"This is a residential area and people deserve to feel safe and welcome in their own homes. It is important that those visiting and living in the wider University area show respect to both themselves and residents and I would appeal to students across the city to respect their neighbours and their new home."
The Department has part funded the employment of an Intervention Manager for the area and also provided £100,000 for an alleyway improvement scheme to reduce anti-social behaviour and provide better security and safety to residents.

Orange Order Agrees To Nationalist Talks
The Orange Order has agreed to engage in talks with a nationalist residents group in north Belfast, following an appeal by a unionist residents group. The Twaddell and Woodvale Residents Association asked local Orange lodges to speak to the Crumlin and Ardoyne Residents Association to find a way to help the 12th of July parades pass off peacefully.

Alliance: Holylands Residents 'Terrorised'
An Alliance MLA said residents of south Belfast are being terrorised by anti-social behaviour after a number of cars were burnt out overnight. Paula Bradshaw referenced a number of reported incidents in the Holylands area while calling for an increased police presence.

Houses evacuated after gas leak
A number of homes have been evacuated in County Down, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has revealed. It is understood residents living in the South Avenue area of Bangor were forced to leave their homes after a suspected gas leak was reported. The Avenue is currently closed until further notice. There are no further details at present.
