Record year forecast despite April new car sales dip
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed that in April there was a dip in new car sales of 3.8%, but remains confident in its forecast a record year for the numbers of new cars sold.
Citing a rise in year-to-date registrations of 3.9% to reach 943,010 vehicles, the organisation remains confident of a record year for car sales.
SMMT Chief Executive Christopher Macgowan commented: "Despite a slight dip in April, we are confident of a fourth consecutive record year for the new car market. March registrations exceeded expectations by nearly 17,000 units, so it is not surprising that this momentum has not continued in April.
"However, in the context of the year-to-date, the market is still significantly up on last year. A strong underlying economy, raft of new model launches and intense competition should see total registrations hit 2.6 million units by the end of the year."
New car registrations in the UK reached a record 2,579,050 million in 2003, up from 2,563,631 units in 2002 and 2,458,769 units in 2001.
In April the SMMT highlighted that specialist sports car registrations rose by 29% units, dual-purpose 4x4 and MPV registrations both demonstrated a strong performance rising by 11%.
However, other reports that strip out seasonal factors indicate that new car sales to private buyers are down by as much as 16% and that the broader market is being supported by fleet and company car sales.
