Covid Alert Reduced To Level 2
The Covid Alert Level has been reduced to Level 2 on the advice of the four UK Chief Medical Officers, the Department of Health (DoH) has announced.
In a statement issued on their website the DoH said: "Based on UKHSA advice, the UK Chief Medical Officers and NHS England National Medical Director have recommended to Ministers the COVID Alert Level moves from Level 3 to Level 2.
"Hospitals and the wider health systems remain extremely busy overall but the summer BA.4 and BA.5 wave is subsiding and direct COVID severe illness is now a much smaller proportion of this. Severe COVID cases, direct COVID healthcare pressures, direct COVID deaths and ONS community positivity estimates have decreased. COVID remains present in the community and we may see an increase in cases with BA 4.6 and BA.2.75 circulating but do not expect this to lead to an immediate increase in hospital pressures. This will continue to be kept under review. Further COVID surges are likely so please be prepared by getting a vaccination when it is offered."

Covid-19 Infections Spike Recorded Over Holidays
As of January 5, 2023, there were 374 in-patients with confirmed COVID-19 in Northern Ireland's hospitals, compared to 226 on December 5, 2022. Releasing the latest Covid-19 figures, the Department of Health has said that the pandemic "continues to cast a long shadow over our health service and wider society".

1,083 New Positive Covid Tests Recorded In Last 24 Hours
There have been 1,083 positive covid tests in Northern Ireland in the last 24 hours, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health(DoH). There have now been a total of 135,227 cases since the pandemic began. However there have been no new coronavirus-related deaths recorded, according to the DoH.

Call For Sick Pay Increase In Line With Minimum Wage
Alliance have called for Statutory sick pay (SSP) to be increased in line with the real living wage. Communities spokesperson Kellie Armstrong MLA said that the change needed to be put in place to prevent anyone being forced to choose between their health and paying bills.

Covid Inquiry Revelations 'Extraordinary And Bizarre' – Beattie
Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader, Doug Beattie, has described some of the revelations of the Covid Inquiry as "extraordinary and bizarre". Mr Beattie has said that the early stages of the inquiry have revealed a "deliberate attempt to isolate and bully the Health Minister".
