Tesco store applications rejected by Government

Tesco have had three applications for new stores in Belfast rejected by the Government.

Environment Minister, Angela Smith refused planning permission for the sites at Barleygold on the Saintfield Road; Morrisons at Danesfort and the Safeway site at Hydebank.

The main reasons given for the refusal included: a failure to meet retail policy (PPS5); contravention of the Belfast Urban Area Plan; and adverse traffic impacts.

However, Mrs Smith did approve a retail application for a new store in Newtownbreda.

The Minister said: "In accepting that the need for a single food superstore in the South Belfast and Castlereagh area had been confirmed following a Public Inquiry, I am satisfied that the Tesco, Newtownbreda proposal complies with all policy tests. The three other retail applications in the area failed to comply with policy and are being refused on clear policy grounds."

The Minister said the Tesco, Newtownbreda application was being approved, subject to the provision of agreed access arrangements and associated roadworks.
