PSNI to relaunch murder inquiry

The PSNI is to relaunch an investigation into the death of a GAA official murdered seven years ago in Co Londonderry.

Sean Brown was shot dead by the Loyalist Volunteer Force after being abducted outside a GAA club in Bellaghy in 1997.

No one was charged with the 61-year-old's murder in the subsequent RUC investigation and a recent report from the Police Ombudsman into the inquiry found that it had not been "efficiently and property carried out".

In January, Nuala O'Loan said her office had upheld two complaints from Mr Brown's family about the original RUC inquiry into his murder.

However following a meeting between the family and PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde an agreement was reached on how a new investigation should proceed.

Mr Orde said because there was no evidence of collusion it was proper for his officers to carry out a new investigation.
