Two People Arrested On Suspicion Of People Smuggling

The PSNI have arrested two people in Belfast on suspicion of offences linked to people smuggling.

At around 8am on Wednesday morning, immigration officers and some 30 police officers conducted raids on two properties in Annadale Drive and Ravenhill Avenue.

A 40-year-old woman and 26-year-old man, originally from Somalia and understood to have lived in NI for 10 years, were detained during the operations.

They are being held at Musgrave Street police station.

Man Charged In Possession Of Heroin
A man is to appear in court charged in possession of heroin. Police arrested five people during searches of a property in Newry on Wednesday, 16 January. Two men have also been charged in possession of a Class A drug. A 50-year-old woman has also been charged with permitting premises to be used for the supply of a Class A drug.

Five to appear in court in connecton with Bangor robbery
Five youths are to appear in Downpatrick Magistrates Court today charged in connection with the robbery of an off-licence in Bangor on Tuesday night. Two youths, who entered the premises on the Rathgael Road, assaulted two female members of staff before making off with a sum of money and alcohol.

Nine people arrested in cigarette smuggling operation
Nine people have been arrested after the PSNI and customs investigators mounted an operation in connection with the smuggling of 23 million cigarettes into the UK. Seven men and two women were arrested after cigarettes, which are believed to have been manufactured in China, were shipped into Southampton and Belfast in freight containers.
