Funerals for boating victims take place

The funerals for two Londonderry men who died in a boating accident off the Co Donegal coast on Monday have taken place today.

Thomas Boyd, 69, from Seymore Gardens, and his son-in-law John January, 42, from Abbeydale, died when their boat capsized in Sheephaven Bay, near Downings.

A joint funeral was held at Ballyoan Cemetery, following a service in Kilfennan Presbyterian Church in the Waterside area.

Monday's tragedy unfolded when an alarm was raised after a body, later identified as that of Mr January, was spotted floating in the water by a jet skier.

A search and rescue operation then began in mid-afternoon and soon Mr Boyd's body was discovered close to a capsized boat taken out by both victims earlier that morning.

Both men are believed to have been wearing life jackets when their bodies were discovered.

A rescue helicopter from neighbouring Co Sligo and local coastguards took part in the search.
