Queen's to close Armagh City campus
Queen's University looks set to close its Armagh City campus, despite objections from students and local political representatives.
It is believed that the centre has not attracted sufficient students to make it a viable higher education campus for the area.
While a statement by the University did not confirm such a move it did say that student numbers had "not met expectations".
"The University continually reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of all its activities and, following the recent publication by the Department for Employment and Learning of a consultation document on further education in Northern Ireland, is now taking the opportunity of engaging with stake-holders about strengthening the relationships between further and higher education in the Armagh area.
"On completion of these discussions, recommendations will be brought forward to the University’s governing body," the statement added.
These recommendations will be discussed before the university's ruling body in June for a final decision.
Ulster Unionist Party Assembly spokesman on Education, Danny Kennedy expressed his dismay at the statement. The Newry and Armagh MLA said: "This is devastating news that will have a serious impact on educational provision in my constituency. It will also impact negatively on the provision of further education in Northern Ireland as a whole.”
Queen’s University established Armagh campus in the mid-1990's and currently provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the Armagh and border regions of the province.

University Of Ulster Campus Development Plan Welcomed
Employment and Learning Minister, Dr Stephen Farry today welcomed the University of Ulster’s £250 million redevelopment plans for its Belfast campus in York Street. The Department for Employment and Learning supported the Belfast campus redevelopment with a funding contribution of £16million in March 2010.
