SERC Announces Annual Open Day And Plant Sale
South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has announced that it will host an Open Day and Plant Sale at its Holywood Campus at Old Holywood Road, on Wednesday 25 May 2022.
SERC's Horticulture team and student's annual plant sale has been a fixture in the gardeners' calendar for several years. It is an opportunity for everyone to pick up a plant, find out about horticulture and Restart education programmes on offer and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the newly opened Wellbeing Garden.
The Community and Engagement team will be there to answer any questions about our Restart programme which provides Adult Returners with the basic knowledge and skills that are required for progression to Level 2 and Level 3 courses within the College; and the Level 3 Access Diploma in Foundation Studies course – both programmes offer plenty of options for progression depending on where you want your return to education to take you.
Claire Dunwoody, Horticulture Lecturer said: "The SERC horticulture team will be available to discuss the exciting range of updated and new courses commencing in September 2022 at the Holywood Campus including, RHS Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture; OCN Level 2 Certificate in Garden Design; Level 2 Award in Organic Fruit & Vegetable Growing; Level 2 Award in Gardening Skills, Level 2 Award in Plant Knowledge; and the new Level 2 Award in Botanical Art which combines art and science for those who want the opportunity to create compositions of plants in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. You can also find out about the OCN Level 2 & 3 Award in Floral Design available at Bangor and Newtownards Campus."
Leisure programmes on offer in Holywood this year include Leisure Organic Fruit & Vegetable Growing; Leisure Gardening (also at Ballynahinch and Downpatrick) and Leisure Floral Art (also at Bangor and Newtownards).
The annual plant sale is the culmination of work throughout the year by students. It is the opportunity to pick up something grown by seed or cuttings, at a fraction of the cost you might pay in a garden centre. We will have a range of annual and perennial plants for sale, which may be purchased (cash only) on the day. All the monies generated from our plant sale goes towards purchasing seeds for the courses.

78 Prosecuted For Rail Offences
78 people were prosecuted for safety related incidents on Northern Ireland's rail network between July 2013 and July 2014, amounting to £17,500 in fines, according to Translink. The majority of offences were due to motorists ignoring warning signals at level crossings or attempting to 'beat the barrier' at a level crossing, the company said.

RUC 'Could Have Prevented Sergeant's Murder'
The Police Ombudsman has said the murder of an RUC sergeant 37 years ago could have been prevented. Sergeant Joseph Campbell, a father-of-eight, was shot dead as he closed Cushendall Police Station in February 1977, and in the report published on Friday, the Ombudsman said his death could have been stopped.

Human Trafficking Strategy Launched
The Justice Minister has announced a new strategy to deal with human trafficking in Northern Ireland. David Ford made the announcement today, on EU Anti-Trafficking Day. The new group is intended to improve engagement between non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Department of Justice, the PSNI and the Health and Social Care Sector.
