Counting Underway In NI Assembly Election

Counting is underway in Northern Ireland Assembly election, with the first results expected by Friday afternoon.

The count is being conducted at Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast, Ulster University in Jordanstown and Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt.

90 MLA's will be elected, with five being appointed across 18 constituencies.

According to reports, the Electoral Office has reported that "turnout was 54% an hour before the polling stations closed".

Counting Begins Of NI Election Votes
Counting of the votes cast in Northern Ireland's European and local elections is underway. Thousands of people went to the polls on Thursday to elect 462 Councillors in the 11 district councils. 905 candidates are competing for 462 seats. Ten candidates are in the running for Northern Ireland's three seats in the European parliament.

Alliance Launches Assembly Election Manifesto
Alliance has launched its Assembly election manifesto which outlines the vision for all of the people of Northern Ireland. The event took place at the Park Avenue Hotel in east Belfast on Tuesday, 21 February. Party leader Naomi Long said the manifesto showcased the need to change things to make politics in NI work better.

Devenney To Stand As Independent Unionist For Foyle
Former DUP councillor Maurice Devenney has confirmed he is to stand as an Independent Unionist for Foyle in the Assembly elections on 05 May. Mr Devenney resigned from the DUP in January after he was suspended over allegations he was canvassing for the SDLP in the Westminster election last May. He denied the allegations.
