Ambulance Service Needs £40m To Tackle Waiting Times

The Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) has said the service will need £40 million over the next five years to address the crisis surrounding waiting times.

Speaking on the BBC's Nolan Show, Michael Bloomfield said that there was a "real concern" over waiting times and that the NIAS was losing 25-30% of operational capacity each week by waiting outside emergency departments, describing is as "the single biggest contributory factor at the minute to our extended waiting times".

Speaking on the Nolan Show, Mr Bloomfield said: "Previously when our staff were working a 12-hour shift, they would have expected to respond to six to eight calls during a shift.

"Because of those extended waiting times at departments, they are typically only doing two or three calls, in some cases only one."

According to Mr Bloomfield, the service is also "320 staff short of what was needed".
