Man's Body Found In Carrickfergus

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with an incident in the Rathcoole area of Newtownabbey.

At around 6am on Monday 28 March, police responded to reports of suspicious activity in the Derrycoole Way area of Rathcoole in Newtownabbey. Responding officers subsequently located and stopped a silver vehicle just before 7am in the Clonmore Green area and arrested the two male occupants, a 68-year-old and a 32-year-old on suspicion of murder.

A short time later, the body of a male was discovered in the water close to the Councillors Road area of Carrickfergus just after 8.45am this morning.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted today but police are treating the death as murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Ray Phelan said: "I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of Derrycoole Way in Rathcoole or Councillors Road/New Line area of Carrickfergus in the early hours of this morning who witnessed anything or anyone with any information that can assist my investigation contact Detectives on 101 quoting reference 244 of 28 March 2022.

"Alternatively information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime."

The mother of an IRA murder victim whose body was never found, suffered a major stroke last week and died in Craigavon Area Hospital. 82-year-old Vera McVeigh campaigned for the return of her son's body after the IRA secretly buried his body in 1975.

Simon Tang: Second Murder Charge Withdrawn
A second murder charge over the killing of Chinese restaurateur Simon Tang in 1996 has been withdrawn. Belfast Magistrates' Court has heard the case against Paul Allen will not proceed. Mr Allen, 39, of Drumhoy Drive, Carrickfergus, faced charges over the murder of Simon Tang. Mr Tang was a married father of two.

Fourth man arrested in connection with Hollran murder
A fourth man has been arrested in connection with the murder of 49-year-old Thomas Hollran in Carrickfergus at the weekend. Yesterday, police in the town arrested three other men, and a number of searches were carried out in the area.
